Hybrid open access
WK|LWW’s hybrid open access option is offered to authors whose articles have been accepted for publication. With this choice, articles are made freely available online immediately upon publication. Authors may take advantage of the open access option at the point of revision. These articles are subject to the journal’s standard peer-review process and will be accepted or rejected based on their own merit.
Authors of accepted peer-reviewed articles have the choice to pay a fee to allow perpetual unrestricted online access to their published article to readers globally, immediately upon publication. The publication fee is charged on acceptance of the article and should be paid within 30 days by credit card by the author, funding agency or institution. Payment must be received in full for the article to be published open access.
Copyright
Authors grant LWW a license to publish the article and identify itself as the original publisher.
Creative Commons license
Open access articles published in WK|LWW journals are made available under the terms of a Creative Commons user license. Open access articles are freely available to read, download and share from the time of publication. The standard license used for WK|LWW articles is the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial No Derivative (CC BY-NC-ND) license which allows readers to disseminate and reuse the article. This license does not permit reuse for any commercial purposes nor does it cover the reuse or modification of individual elements of the work (such as figures, tables, etc.) in the creation of derivative works without specific permission.
Authors whose work is funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), Research Councils UK or Wellcome Trust and wish to publish their article as open access will be able to publish under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) license which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited.
Under the terms of any of these licenses, the reuse of an article requires proper attribution of the original work. Whether reusing, displaying, or reposting an article, the user must attribute the article to the original author.
Below are guidelines on what type of reuse is permitted under different Creative Commons licenses used in the WK|LWW hybrid program.

Compliance with HHMI, NIH, and Wellcome Trust Public Access Policies
A number of research funding agencies now require or request authors to submit the post-print (the article after peer review and acceptance but not the final published article) to a repository that is accessible online without charge. As a service to our authors, WK|LWW identifies to the National Library of Medicine (NLM) articles that require deposit and transmits the post-print of an article based on research funded in whole or in part by the National Institutes of Health, Wellcome Trust, or Howard Hughes Medical Institute to PubMed Central. WK|LWW ensures that authors can fully comply with the public access requirements of major funding bodies worldwide. Authors may indicate such funding when completing the journal’s Copyright Transfer Agreement. Additionally, all authors who choose the open access option will have their final published article deposited into PubMed Central immediately upon publication.
Compliance with Funder-Mandated Open Access Policies
WK|LWW’s hybrid open access program provides authors with a means to comply with open access mandates and meet applicable license requirements.
Research Councils UK
The Research Councils UK has established mandatory policies for open access to research publications. WK|LWW offers options which allow RCUK-funded authors to comply with these policies. Authors may choose to comply with RCUK policies by either gold or green open access:
Gold Route. RCUK funded authors can choose to publish their paper open access with the payment of an article process charge. Articles will be made available under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution (CCBY) License and the final version of the article will be deposited to PubMed Central on publication.
Green Route. If a WK|LWW journal does not offer an open access option or authors do not have funding available, authors may make their papers available in an open access repository under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution – Non-Commercial (CCBY- NC) license after an embargo period. Under these terms of the author will not authorize the display of the final peer-reviewed manuscript prior to 12 months following publication of the final article if the journal offers an open access option or 6 months if the journal does not offer this option.

The Wellcome Trust requires electronic copies of any research papers that have been accepted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal, and are supported in whole or in part by Wellcome Trust funding, to be made available through PubMed Central (PMC) and Europe PubMed Central (Europe PMC) as soon as possible and in any event within six months of the journal publisher's official date of final publication
Wellcome Trust funded authors can choose to publish their paper open access with the payment of an article process charge (gold OA). Articles will be made available under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) license and the final version of the article will be deposited to PubMed Central on publication.
If an author does not choose a gold OA option or a journal does not offer such an option, WK|LWW will deposit the post-print version (the article after peer review and acceptance but not the final published article) to PubMed Central. The post-print will be made available 6 months after the publication of the final version of the article.
