This is the 7th World Organization for Specialized Studies on Diseases of the Esophagus (OESO) meeting. It is convened every 3 years in Paris. It has been the brainchild and hard work of Dr. Robert Giuli. During the past few years, the organization has been broadened and a new administration developed. Its first president was Dr. Joel Richter of United States, and the succeeding president is Dr. J.R. Siewert of Munich.

The uniqueness of this meeting is that it uses the format and basic educational principles of asking a question and selecting an expert to answer that question in detail with a referenced answer. Dr. Giuli and his scientific committee have varied the number of questions, but they have ranged as high as 420, and the answers to the questions have been published in book format repeatedly. 1 Many of us have seen those books and used them for important references. The question-and-answer format is used in many areas, but never in such a large fashion and so successfully. As the meeting grew in size and attendance, young investigators were encouraged to submit abstracts. The Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology had the opportunity to publish the selected winning abstracts of the last meeting in 2000 2 and now in this issue publishes all of the submitted abstracts of the meeting. The attendance is very broad internationally, and the abstracts reflect the universality of the meeting and the scientific world working in this area.

Dr. Giuli, Dr. Richter, and the many physicians and staff are to be applauded for such a successful educational effort that enriches our knowledge in esophageal disease and upper gastrointestinal physiology. The Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology would like to congratulate Dr. Robert Giuli and Dr. Joel Richter for running a very successful 7th World Congress Meeting. It is an outstanding event in understanding esophageal disease, and all those that attended look forward to the 8th meeting in 2006.
