About the Journal

Mission and Vision Statement

The Journal of Continuing Education in the Health Professions (JCEHP) is the official journal of the Alliance for Continuing Education in the Health Professions, the Association for Hospital Medical Education, and the Society for Academic Continuing Medical Education.

The Alliance is a community of professionals dedicated to accelerating excellence in health care performance through education, advocacy, and collaboration.

The Association for Hospital Medical Education develops professional education programs to enhance the knowledge and skills of CME educators/administrators and facilitates the continued development of continuing medical education as a value added educational activity that provides a positive measurable impact on the quality of health care.

The Society for Academic Continuing Medical Education promotes research, evaluation, and development of effective continuing medical education intended to improve the health of North Americans.

The Journal of Continuing Education in the Health Professions (JCEHP) is committed to publishing articles relevant to theory, research, practice and policy that contribute to the continuing professional development of individual and teams of healthcare professionals and the health professions.

The Journal takes a modified definition of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) from Sargeant et al., (2013) which includes all health care professionals as part its raison d’être:

"CPD encompasses multiple educational and developmental activities which healthcare professionals undertake to maintain and enhance their knowledge, skills, performance and relationships in the provision of health care. The ultimate goal of CPD is to enhance the quality and safety of patient care and to enhance health outcomes."1

1 Sargeant et al. Practicing Physicians' Needs for Assessment and Feedback as Part of Professional Development. J Contin Educ Health Prof 2013;33(S1).

This definition encompasses the development, delivery, evaluation of educational interventions and facilitation of workplace learning.

More specifically, JCEHP seeks to improve the scholarship and practice of CPD at the nexus of Patient Safety, Implementation Science, Quality Improvement, Continuing Education and Faculty Development across Medicine, Nursing and other health professions. The aim of JCEHP is to support CPD activities that improve the exchange of knowledge between health scientists, professionals, researchers, educators and patients across the health professions. The Journal publishes CPD articles enhancing healthcare professionals’ knowledge and practice with the aim of improving healthcare outcomes. JCEHP is particularly concerned with research that seeks to generate knowledge about best-practice implementation strategies relating to team-based and individual patient safety and quality of care practices.
