Free, immediate, online access for any user, web‐wide, to digital scientific and scholarly material, primarily research articles published in peer‐reviewed journals.
What is the article processing charge for and how much does it cost?
The payment of the article processing charge means that the article will be freely available online in perpetuity. The payment covers copy‐editing, production/layout, and hosting of the article. The APC is $2,300 USD. If the author originally submitted the paper to
The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery and has paid a submission fee, the author will receive a coupon code in the amount of the fee paid to us upon acceptance for publication in
JBJS OA.
If the corresponding author is a member of the American Orthopaedic Association (AOA) or an AOA program affiliate (including Emerging Leaders Program, Own the Bone institution, traveling fellow, APEX program, or CORD Affiliate) and is submitting an AOA Critical Issues in Education article, the author will receive a $1,300 USD coupon code to use upon acceptance for publication in
JBJS OA making the total APC $1,000 USD.
When will the article processing charge be paid?
After the article has been accepted.
How do authors pay the article processing charge?
After a submission begins production, the corresponding author will receive an email with instructions to pay the article processing charge.
Is it possible to get a discount or a waiver on the article processing charge?
If an author has previously submitted his/her paper to
The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery and has paid a submission fee, this fee will be deducted from the final article processing charge if the article is accepted. If the corresponding author is a member of the American Orthopaedic Association or an AOA program affiliate, a discount code will be sent to the author upon acceptance. JBJS OA does not offer any additional discounts or waivers.
Can institutions or other third parties pay the article processing charge on an author’s behalf?
Yes.
Are the peer-review and production processes for
JBJS OA articles the same as those for
JBJS articles?
Yes.
How does
JBJS OA ensure that the peer-review process is not biased?
All articles submitted to
JBJS OA undergo our standard peer-review process and are accepted or rejected on the basis of their merit only.
Who owns copyright to the article?
The authors retain copyright. After the article has been accepted, the corresponding author will be required to sign a
License to Publish form and upload that form to the
JBJS OA manuscript submission system. The article will then be published under the terms of the
Creative Commons Attribution‐NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International (CC BY-NC-ND) license or under the terms of the
Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY) license.
What is a Creative Commons License?
Articles published as open access will be freely available to be read, downloaded, and shared from the time of publication. The
Creative Commons license allows readers to disseminate and reuse the article as well as share and reuse the scientific material. Under the terms of any of these licenses, the reuse of an article requires proper attribution of the original work. Whether reusing, displaying, or reposting an article, the user must attribute the article to the original author.
Can
JBJS OA articles be posted to a personal website or institutional repository?
Yes.
Will
JBJS OA articles be deposited in PubMed Central?
JBJS OA is indexed in PubMed Central, Scopus, the Directory of Open Access Journals, Portico, and CrossRef. Articles are discoverable via PubMed.
