JBJS Elite Reviewers Program

Our Reviewers are a key component to JBJS' ability to publish the highest quality of evidence-based, scientific information, to advance research and enhance the quality of care for orthopaedic patients. JBJS Reviewers provide critical analysis, and support our editors' decision-making for submitted manuscripts. They are asked to respond to a request to evaluate a manuscript within 5 days, and complete a review of an initial submission within 14 days. It is undoubtedly a formidable task, even more so because it is done voluntarily, as an act of service to the orthopaedic community and knowledge base. For this reason, JBJS is dedicated to recognizing and supporting our Reviewers through our JBJS Elite Reviewers Program.

Launched in January 2016, the JBJS Elite Reviewers Program publicly recognizes our best reviewers for their outstanding efforts. It is our hope that the Program and its reviewer benefits will encourage all reviewers to aspire to meet the program requirements.

Program eligibility and qualification requirements

  • Review 4 or more manuscripts per year
  • Rarely decline an invitation to review a manuscript, responding within 48 hours
  • Return reviews within 1 week, and be highly graded for quality of input

Benefits of being a JBJS Elite Reviewer

  • No submission fees for papers that the reviewer is the senior author (for 12 months)
  • Free CME credits for all reviews
  • Free online access to all JBJS publications (valued at $424)
  • A letter to the reviewer's department head from JBJS Editor-in-Chief, Marc Swiontkowski, MD, recognizing and commending his/her good work
  • Name recognition on the JBJS Elite Reviewers Program Web page and on the masthead of The Journal

The JBJS Elite Reviewers list is evaluated and updated twice per year.

JBJS is grateful for all of its consultant reviewers who have a wide range of knowledge and interests, and generously contribute their time and expertise to the task at hand. We welcome your participation in the JBJS Elite Reviewer Program, and look forward to working together.
