Light chain amyloid deposition has various causes and can occur in any organ but the brain, disrupting the tissue architecture and interfering with organ function.

At the time this article was written, Eric Vickrey was practicing in the division of hematology/oncology at Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation in Chicago, Illinois. He was also a member of the speakers bureau for the Celgene Corporation, which manufactures lenalidomide (Revlimid) and thalidomide (Thalidomid), and for Millenium Pharmaceuticals, which manufactures bortezomib (Velcade).
