The diagnosis and treatment of dementia with Lewy bodies

Abstract

• Describe the pathophysiology of dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB)
• Review the revised criteria for the diagnosis of DLB
• Discuss treatment options, with a special focus on acetylcholinesterase inhibitors
• Examine the efficacy of other pharmacologic therapy and of nonpharmacologic interventions

An accurate diagnosis is needed to develop an appropriate treatment plan. Revisions in the diagnostic criteria for DLB help PAs to distinguish it more easily from other dementias.
