THE SUBMISSION PROCESS FOR JAAOS
The
JAAOS manuscript submission platform is hosted by Aries Systems Corporation Editorial Manager® (www.editorialmanager.com/jaaos).
The
JAAOS manuscript submission process is open to:
(1) Authors of manuscript proposals that have received presubmission approval for Standard Review, Orthopaedic Advances, Surgical Techniques, or The Training Room manuscripts.
(2) Authors who are invited by the
JAAOS Editorial Board to submit a manuscript.
(3) Authors who submit full manuscripts that fall under the category of Case Reports or Research.
You may submit full manuscripts for Case Reports or Research without an invitation or proposal, but the
JAAOS Editorial Board will determine whether your manuscript will proceed to the peer review process, and it is possible that your paper may not be accepted for publication.
JAAOS also publishes Supplements or Speical Editions, by invitation only. No simultaneous submissions (to more than one publisher) or multi-part articles will be considered.
JAAOS requires all authors to meet the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) criteria for authorship: ICMJE Recommendations for the Conduct, Reporting, Editing, and Publication of Scholarly work in Medical Journals.
For Standard Review, Orthopaedic Advances, and Surgical Techniques manuscripts, the following authorship rules apply:
- Please see instructions for authors here: Instructions for Authors
- In general, authors are expected to be attending surgeons. A single fellow in advanced post-residency training may serve as an author but not the corresponding author. There may be a role for a single advanced resident in training (explicitly not a junior resident) to serve as an author with pre-approval prior to manuscript submission: such approval is contingent on clear justification for the individual's qualification and role in the paper in the manuscript proposal process (for example, Dr. Smith, PGY-5 resident, is pursuing fellowship training in shoulder and elbow surgery and has completed xxx research projects related to this manuscript; she will assist with the background framing of the manuscrip but the primary clinical interpretation will be under the auspices of Drs. Brown and Jones, faculty authors). In such cases the attending surgeon(s) are expected to be the primary authors of the manuscript as they are in a position to write with authority on the clinical topic. The Senior and Corresponding authors (which may be the same) should be attending physicians.
- Training Room articles address aspects of orthopaedic education and will naturally often have trainees as authors. However, faculty authors must be the senior and corresponding authors for these papers.
For all articles, except Research and Case Reports, the maximum number of authors allowed is four.
Open Access Publication
Authors of accepted peer-reviewed articles have the choice to pay a fee to allow perpetual unrestricted online access to their published article to readers globally, immediately upon publication. Authors may take advantage of the open access option at the point of acceptance to ensure that this choice has no influence on the peer review and acceptance process. These articles are subject to the journal's standard peer-review process and will be accepted or rejected based on their own merit.
The article processing charge (APC) is charged on acceptance of the article and should be paid within 30 days by the author, funding agency or institution. Payment must be processed for the article to be published open access. For a list of journals and pricing, please visit the Wolters Kluwer Hybrid Open Access page.
