Hospice and palliative care at home continues to grow. Every issue of Home Healthcare Nurse has a feature or column entitled "Hospice and Palliative Care." This is done because end-of-life care is such a common part of home health and hospice clinicians’ daily work. When asked, most patients wish to remain at home at end-of-life. Sadly, the numbers do not reflect this wish.
The articles chosen for this section include regulatory information, such as those about hospice documentation, the Medicare “new” Interpretative Guidelines, and data collection in hospice. Other articles are what hospice “looks like” elsewhere –such as New Zealand, the benefits of hospice certification, palliative care in heart failure patients, the need for evidence-based research in hospice and palliative care, and a hospice physician’s perspective on medications for the relief of pain and suffering.
