We have attempted to develop a direct reading rem ratemeter based on the initial recombination of ions in gas. We have experimentally investigated the use of two tissue-equivalent spherical ionization chambers 4 in. in diameter and three kinds of TE gases: Rossi's TE gas, Shonka's TE gas, and P-B-A gas at a pressure range of 1–5 kg/cm2 and at a bias potential of 10–3000 V. We have established the conditions under which the sensitivity of each chamber is linear with the quality factor of radiation for the three TE gases. Finally, we discuss the possibility of developing a rem ratemeter using these two chambers.
