The Arizona Atomic Energy Commission and Arizona State University have implemented a statewide radiologic environmental monitoring system to evaluate existing and future radioactivity levels in water. After three years, approximately 650 samples have been assayed for gross alpha and gross beta activity. Wherever high gross alpha results appear, a separate radium assay is performed. The statewide average for gross alpha activity is 4.9 pCi/l, gross beta activity is 6.4 pCi/l, and radium is 0.2 pCi/l. No trends or abnormally high radioactivity levels have been observed. Values compare favorably with published results for adjacent states and other areas of the world.
