The distribution of 252Cf administered intramuscularly to rats as nitrate at pH 1.5,0.2–0.4 microCi per rat, was studied for comparison with that of other transplutonium elements. There was rapid bone deposition, representing 15% of the injected dose (I D) 1 day after the contamination and 25.5% I D 8 days later. DTPA treatment was successful even when started 3 weeks after 252Cf injection; when DTPA treatment was begun 24 hr after 252Cf, by 2 months, the urinary excretion was increased from 38.5 to 71.4 I D, contamination of the leg decreased from 14.9 to 2.2% I D, and the bone burden too was reduced from 26.0 to 6.5% I D.
