Effect of 22Na+ on a Phospholipid Membrane

Radioactive 22Na+ has been used to irradiate model phospholipid membranes. It was found that the membranes rupture after irradiation periods varying from 20 to 600 min, depending on the dose rate. It was further found that both the membrane duration and the absorbed dose at which the membrane ruptured could be correlated with the dose rate by both power and exponential functions. The phenomenon is discussed on the basis of radiation-initiated oxidation and polymerization reactions.
