Some of the mechanisms by which particles are cleared from the lung are discussed. Emphasis has been placed on relatively insoluble particles deposited in alveoli. The fundamental mechanisms of clearance are discussed, with some emphasis on those aspects which are pertinent to the calculations of the radiation dosage to the lung as usually performed.
