This article develops guidelines for effective health services management participation in community health partnerships. Drawing on our study of Community Care NetworkSM (CCN) Demonstration, the strategic alliance literature, and other research, we describe six challenges that health services managers are likely to face as partnership participants and discuss the strategies that they might use to deal with them.

Bryan J. Weiner, Ph.D., is Assistant Professor, Health Policy and Administration, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Jeffrey A. Alexander, Ph.D., is Professor, Health Services Management and Policy, University of Michigan School of Public Health, Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Howard S. Zuckerman, Ph.D., is Professor, Department of Health Services, School of Public Health & Community Medicine, University of Washington, Seattle.

The authors acknowledge the helpful comments of William Martin on the subject of managing demographic diversity in collaborative contexts. Support for this research was provided by the W. K. Kellogg Foundation.
