Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) levels were measured by radioimmunoassay in the serum and amniotic fluid of Rh-immunized pregnant women. The circulating AFP levels in immunized patients were higher than in normal pregnant women. A pronounced increase in the AFP levels occurred in severe Rh-immunization associated with intrauterinc fetal death, and elevated AFP levels were detected preceding the fetal death. Instead of the expected decrease, amniotic fluid AFP concentrations increased in 2 cases of severe fetal crythroblastosis, the results indicate that AFP levels in serum and amniotic fluid may provide a further marker in the monitoring of Rh-immunized pregnancies.
