Inhibition of Puerperal Lactation

Double-Blind Comparison of Chlorothianesene, Testosterone Enanthate with Estradiol Valerate and Placebo

Abstract

Four hundred eighty-four puerperal patients who did not wish to breast feed their newborn infants were treated with one of three preparations: (1) oral chlorotrianesene, a nonsteroidal proestrogen, in three different dosage strengths; (2) an intramuscular combination of the two steroids, testosterone enanthate and estradiol valerate; and (3) identical placebos. Medication was administered in a double-blind, placebo-controlled manner and the data recorded on specially prepared case report forms which were then transferred to a computer and subjected to statistical analysis. The results clearly demonstrated that both drugs were significantly more effective than placebo therapy for inhibition of lactation and relief of breast engorgement and discomfort, and that the best results were achieved with the intramuscular steroid combination.
