Obstetrics & Gynecology: August 1969 - Volume 34 - Issue 2 - p 151-155 Free Abstract The concentration of cord bilirubin—the result of erythrocyte hemolysis—determines the quantity of pigment which escapes into amniotic fluid. As both values increase, the level of cord hemoglobin goes down—fetal anemia is increased. The determination of the clinical course to be pursued is based on the optical density readings, known to be correlated with fetal anemia, irrespective of the maternal obstetric history. © 1969 The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists
