Description of conflicts of interest, or statement that there is no conflict of interest: Beginning in 2006, the author has received one grant and several payments for statistical consulting from the American Petroleum Institute. These sources of support have been acknowledged in two published research papers and numerous verbal and written public comments to the Environmental Protection Agency. During 2017-2019, he was one of several researchers supported in a research project on Causal Methods in Epidemiological Studies of Particulate Matter and Mortality, supported by a consortium of industry partners including the American Petroleum Institute. Since October 2017, he has been a member of the Science Advisory Board of the Environmental Protection Agency. In this letter, the author is not speaking on behalf of either the American Petroleum Institute or the Science Advisory Board.
