Letter to the Editor
In my humble opinion, the Twitter attacks on Dr. Edwin Leap for his article “D/C: A Little More of the God's Honest Truth” are being orchestrated by the worst in our ranks: the politically correct minions who appointed themselves the only arbiters of good taste and proper practice of EM. (EMN 2019;41:21; http://bit.ly/2TgtHwl.)
These are the folks who love to hear themselves talk in the Twitterverse and feel if they simply shout their opinions, they will drown out the rest of the silent majority. I can usually tune their drivel out but no longer.
As we all should know, the word doctor comes from docere, meaning to teach. Many of our current problems, including the opioid epidemic and reliance on metrics and patient satisfaction scores, have resulted from the role of teacher being stripped away from us and doctors being turned into little more than fast food workers. It is a major reason for burnout. The best teachers are often the ones who give us tough love and tell it like it is, not how we think it is or what we want to hear. Dr. Leap is a doctor and a teacher in every sense of the word. He is an asset to our profession and possesses a treasure trove of knowledge. He should be treated as the gem he is.
