Editor:

While I totally support helping the homeless, it seems to me that passing a bill for the emergency department to find shelter for the homeless changes the ED from actually focusing on emergencies that are life or death into a humanitarian effort that needs to be addressed by social services. (“California Law Setting Discharge Rules for Homeless Patients Creates Tough Task for EDs,” EMN. 2019;41[3]:1; http://bit.ly/2Jf2mLa.)

Otherwise, I predict that the 1.5 billion homeless population will start to walk through the ED doors claiming some kind of trouble just to be sheltered for free. I'm not opposed to finding shelter for them, but social services or another agency should be dealing with this, not the ED.
