I read Dr. Edwin Leap's article and loved it. (“I Feel So Dirty and Used!” EMN 2009;31:14.) I've been doing full-time emergency medicine for more than 20 years, and have watched this all develop like an unstoppable glacier.
I love taking care of seriously ill patients. It happens so seldom now that I usually go home and tell my wife how excited I was to take care of someone ill. We see 35 to 40 patients a day, with fully 85 to 90 percent nonemergency visits and at least 30 percent frank drug-seeking. But you better not offend them or forget to get them a warm blanket. I can't wait to retire!
