I have always enjoyed Dr. Edwin Leap's column, but I am not the type to write. After reading his column about why he works, though, I felt compelled to. (EMN 2009;31:20.)
I'm a residency trained, board certified emergency physician who has worked at the same high-volume, high-acuity hospital for the past 16 years. My group recently lost its contract after more than 20 years of service. I find myself unemployed for the first time in 30 years.
My first thought was how this would affect my family. I was sure my two teenagers would be devastated to have to leave their school and friends. I found out how quickly roles can reverse. My wife and children told me they were ok with wherever we moved as long as I was happy. All those late night hugs and kisses really pay off.
