In Brief:
The Transtheoretical Model (TTM) and the Health Belief Model (HBM) were applied to 182 adults seeking hearing help for the first time. Their attitudes towards hearing health behaviors were examined. Most participants were in the action stage of change. Greater hearing impairment was associated with being at a more advanced stage of change, and with the perception of fewer Barriers, and more Susceptibility, Severity, Benefits and Cues to action. Participation restrictions, duration of hearing difficulty, hearing impairment, and perceived Benefits, Self-efficacy and Cues to action were significant predictors of stage of change. It is concluded that the TTM and HBM are valuable for understanding hearing health behaviors.
