In Brief:
Fatigue is an important, but understudied, accompaniment of hearing loss. The negative effects of hearing-related fatigue can be significant, and children with hearing loss may be particularly susceptible to its effects. In this paper we introduce the construct of fatigue and its relation to hearing loss, particularly in children. We discuss several aspects of fatigue, including its importance, definitions, prevalence, consequences, and potential linkage to increased listening effort in persons with hearing loss. We also provide a brief overview of methods to quantify listening effort and fatigue and comment on the use of amplification as a management strategy for reducing fatigue effects in children with hearing loss.
