Research efforts in social phobia are directed toward better definition of the disorder and its boundaries, as well as identification of effective treatment strategies. A growing body of epidemiological research is contributing to knowledge about many aspects of the disorder, including aetiological and outcome factors. The cognitive factors that underlie social phobia and distinguish it from other anxiety disorders and normal social anxiety are being elucidated.
