The precise effect of chromosomal translocations involving the c-myc proto-oncogene in lymphomagenesis is unknown due to limited knowledge of the function of the c-Myc protein. Recent results suggest that c-Myc can function as a transcriptional regulator in heterodimeric complexes with the related protein Max and that opposite regulation of target gene expression and cell proliferation can be obtained by using a differential assortment of c-Myc—Max complexes.
