The hematopoietic growth factors are able to influence the types and numbers of mature cells produced upon differentiation of hematopoietic stem cells. The ability of growth factors to prevent apoptosis of progenitor cells has led to the suggestion that this is one of their major roles and that their role in differentiation may be enabling rather than inductive.
