The in vitro and in vivo clonogenic assays that led to the isolation of mouse hematopoietic stem cells have been used to identify candidate human fetal bone marrow hematopoietic stem cells that may be capable of initiating long-term myeloerythroid and lymphoid stromal cultures, and of in vivo seeding and repopulating human fetal bone and thymic grafts in SCID-hu mice. It seems likely that future studies of the biology and clinical potential of hematopoietic stem cells will soon be accomplished in man as well as mouse.
