The specific membrane receptors for each hematopoietic regulator are glycoproteins and most have at least two subunits, one of which may be shared. The arrangement allows competitive interactions between regulators and may facilitate the initiation of the multiple signaling cascades needed to mediate these diverse responses to the regulators.
