Embryonic stem cells derived from mouse blastocysts provide an ideal system for studying stem cell differentiation into hematopoietic cells in vitro. In combination with gene transfer, these cells allow the generation of mice with predetermined genetic changes, which is a unique tool for investigating gene function in mammalian development and disease.
