The spectrum of genes with oncogenic potential is broadening. Two unusual genes implicated in hematopoietic neoplasia are bcl-2, which confers enhanced cell survival, and Hox-2.4, which encourages self-renewal at the expense of differentiation. In this short paper, recent transgenic and retroviral studies of the role of these genes in neoplastic transformation are reviewed
