The colony-stimulating factor 1 relays signals through parallel pathways to induce immediate early response genes. Mitogenic signals are blocked by interfering with ras, ets, or myc action, with ras and ets appearing to function upstream of myc. Growth factor-regulated G1 cyclins and their associated kinases are required for progression into S phase and can act to override the suppressive effect of the retinoblastoma protein on G1 exit.
