Current Opinion in Hematology was launched in 1994. It is part of a successful series of review journals whose unique format is designed to provide a systematic and critical assessment of the literature as presented in the many primary journals. The field of hematology is divided into nine sections that are reviewed once a year. Each section is assigned a Section Editor, a leading authority in the area, who identifies the most important topics at that time. Here we are pleased to introduce the Section Editor for this issue.
Alvin H. Schmaier
Dr Alvin H. Schmaier is the Robert W. Kellermeyer Professor of Hematology and Oncology at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center and Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH, USA. He is a physician-scientist benign hematology with an active NIH-funded laboratory for over 40 years. His area of investigations includes the vascular biology of Factor XII and the Kallikrein/Kinin System and Hemostasis and Thrombosis. He was the Hematology and Oncology Division Chief at University Hospitals from 2005 to 2009. Dr Schmaier has been Professors of Medicine at Temple University School of Medicine, USA from 1980 to 1991 and University of Michigan, USA from 1991 to 2005. He is the past Director of the Coagulation Laboratories at both Temple University Hospital and the University of Michigan and Course Director of the M2 Hematology Course at the University of Michigan. Dr Schmaier is an elected member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation, the Peripathetic Club, and the Association of American Physicians. He frequently serves on NIH study sections. He is an active member of the American Society of Hematology and the International Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis. He is the author of several hundred publications and he also has had 39 MD or PhD trainees in the field of hemostasis and thrombosis.
