EDITORIAL INTRODUCTIONS

Current Opinion in Clinical Nutrition and Metabolic Care was launched in 1998. It is one of a successful series of review journals whose unique format is designed to provide a systematic and critical assessment of the literature as presented in the many primary journals. The fields of clinical nutrition and metabolic care are divided into 15 sections that are reviewed once a year. Each section is assigned a Section Editor, a leading authority in the area, who identifies the most important topics at that time. Here we are pleased to introduce the Editors and Section Editors for this issue.

EDITORS IN CHIEF

Luc A. Cynober

Luc A. Cynober, PhD, Pharm.D is head of the Department of Clinical Biochemistry, Cochin Hospital, Paris, and is Professor of Nutrition at the Faculty of Pharmacy, University Paris Descartes, France. Dr Cynober obtained his Pharm.D degree in 1979 from the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Paris XI. In 1985, he received his PhD in Biological and Pharmaceutical Sciences from the same university.

Dr Cynober is a member of the European Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ESPEN), American Nutrition Society, American Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition and French Speaking Society of Clinical Biology, among others. He served from 1992 to 2000 as officer in the executive committee of ESPEN, and from 2001 to 2005 as chairman of the French-Speaking Society of Nutrition and Metabolism. In the years 1987–1992 he served as editor-in-chief of Nutrition Clinique & Métabolisme.

Among other awards, he has received the Pharmacy Academy Award for his PhD thesis, and the International Research Award of the French Society of Clinical Biology. Dr Cynober has presented over 100 invited lectures at international and national meetings. He has published more than 220 original research papers and more than 100 review papers. He is the editor of a book dealing with amino acids’ metabolism and therapy in clinical nutrition (published by CRC Press). His current major research interests relate to amino acid metabolism and therapy in critical illness, aging and cancer.

Yvon A. Carpentier

Yvon A. Carpentier completed medical school and a residency in surgery at the Free University of Brussels (ULB), Belgium. After a short training in Stockholm (Professor Arvid Wretlind) and Montpellier (Professor C. Solassol and H. Joyeux), he initiated nutritional support in Belgium in 1973. He benefited from post-doctoral Fulright and NATO fellowships to undergo research in lipid metabolism at the Rockefeller University, (Professor J. Hirsch) and in surgical metabolism at Columbia University, (Professor J.M. Kinney), New York City, USA from 1977–1978. After returning to Brussels, he became Director of the L. Deloyers Laboratory for Experimental Surgery, Free University of Brussels (ULB) and is currently Director of the Lipid Clinic, Cardio-vascular Center, Hôpital Erasme, Belgium. He is Professor of Pathological Biochemistry and of Nutrition at the ULB.

Yvon A. Carpentier was among the founders of the European Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ESPEN) in 1979 and chairman of ESPEN (1994–1998). He has served as president of the International Confederation of Nutrition Support Organizations (ICNSO). His main research interest is in lipid metabolism and its relationship to cardio-vascular diseases and in the development of new lipid preparations. He has published over 200 papers in this field.

Yvon A. Carpentier has served as visiting professor and lecturer in Europe, the USA, Latin America, Asia and Israel. He has delivered over 250 invited and guest lectures. He has been chairing the “Nutrition and Health” group at the National Council of Nutrition, Belgium. He has also acted as chairman of the Belgian Lipid Club and of a research group on Nutrition and Health supported by the Belgian “Fonds National de la Recherche Scientifique”.

Jürgen M. Bauer

In September 2016 Jüergen M. Bauer took over the newly established chair for geriatric medicine at the Ruprecht Karls University of Heidelberg, Germany. In 2010 he had been appointed director of the newly formed Geriatrics Centre Oldenburg, Germany, which since 2012 forms part of the medical campus of the Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg. Between 2004 and 2010 he worked as assistant medical director at the Department of Geriatric Medicine at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany.

His research work and academic career was supported by a four year scholarship of the Robert-Bosch-Foundation. Before moving into the field of geriatric medicine Jüergen M. Bauer was trained in gastroenterology and as a specialist in clinical nutrition.

In recent years, Jüergen M. Bauer's research interest has focused on nutrition and its relationship with functionality in older persons. He was a member of several international expert groups that worked on the definitions of sarcopenia and frailty in older persons. Between 2012 and 2015 he contributed to various consensus and research papers that focused on protein intake and amino acid supplementation in older adults.

Jüergen M. Bauer is a member of several national and international medical societies including the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN). In 2010 he was honored to become a member of the ESPEN faculty. Since 2015 he is working as a co-editor of Clinical Nutrition.

From 2007 until 2015 he was a member of the executive board of the European Union Geriatric Medicine Society (EUGMS). Since 2015 Jüergen M. Bauer has been a member of the committee of the scientific advisors of the International Osteporosis Foundation (IOF) and in September 2016 Jüergen M. Bauer was elected president of the German Geriatrics Society (DGG).

Already in 2007 Jüergen M. Bauer had been awarded the honorary prize of the German Geriatric Society.

John E. Morley

John E. Morley, MB, BCh, is the Dammert Professor of Gerontology and Director of the Division of Geriatric Medicine at Saint Louis University Medical Center, USA. He also serves as Medical Director for two nursing homes.

Dr Morley earned a medical degree at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. After an internal medicine residency in Johannesburg, he completed a fellowship in endocrinology at the University of California, Los Angeles, USA.

He has edited more than 20 books, including Medical Care in the Nursing Home, Geriatric Nutrition, Endocrinology of Aging, and Principles and Practice of Geriatric Medicine. His most recent book, published in 2008, is The Science of Staying Young, which provides information for the general public. He has published more than 1000 papers, with major research emphases on the role of neuropeptides in the modulation of hormonal responses and behavior and on nutrition and hormones in the elderly. He edits the geriatrics section of Cyberounds and serves as Editor of the Journal of Nutrition, Health and Ageing. He is a former editor of the Journal of the American Medical Directors Association (JAMDA). He has been an invited speaker at numerous national and international meetings.

For his work in appetite regulation, Dr Morley received the Mead Johnson Award of the American Institution of Nutrition in 1985. He was named Medical Director of the Year for Life Care Centers of America in 1998. In 1999, he was awarded the IPSEN Foundation Longevity Prize, among the most prestigious European awards for research in gerontology. In 2001, he received the Gayle and Richard Olson Prize for Most Outstanding Behavioral Paper Published the Previous Year in the Journal Peptides and the American Dietetic Association's Circle Award. He was chosen to receive the American Geriatrics Society's Nascher/Manning Award in 2002 for life-long achievement in clinical geriatrics. In 2004, he was awarded the Joseph T. Freeman Award by the Gerontological Society of America for his work in geriatrics research and practice. He was honored in 2005 with the Marsha Goodwin-Beck Interdisciplinary Award for Excellence in Geriatric Leadership by the Department of Veterans Affairs National Leadership Board. In 2011 he was awarded the James Pattee Award for Educational Excellence from the American Medical Directors Association.

Alessandro Laviano

Alessandro Laviano, MD, is associate professor of Internal Medicine at the Department of Clinical Medicine, Sapienza University of Rome, Italy. He works at the Clinical Nutrition Unit of the Sapienza University Hospital in Rome, Italy. Dr Laviano also holds a position of Visiting Research Professor at Upstate Medical University, Syracuse, NY, USA. He is an Expert Reviewer for the Framework Programs of the European Commission, Bruxelles. Dr Laviano received his MD degree at the Sapienza University of Rome, Italy, where he also completed residency programmes in Internal Medicine and Nephrology. In the period 1994–1995, Dr Laviano worked as a research fellow in the Surgical Metabolism Laboratory at the Department of Surgery, SUNY Health Science Center, Syracuse, NY, USA. Dr Laviano joined the Faculty of the Medical School at Sapienza University in 1998, and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2007.

Dr Laviano's main research interests are in the regulation of food intake under physiological and pathological conditions, disease-associated anorexia and cachexia, hyperphagia and obesity, impact and treatment of hospital malnutrition. In particular, Dr Laviano has been studying the role of brain activity in the pathogenesis of cancer anorexia and cachexia, and the potential benefit arising from the integration of a pharmacologic and nutritional approach to cancer patients.

In the period 2010–2014, Dr Laviano has been the chairman of the Educational and Clinical Practice Committee of the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN). He is currently the Coordinator of the Supervisory Board of the ESPEN project. In the period 2005–2009, Dr Laviano served as European Co-Editor of Nutrition. In the period 2011–2013, Dr Laviano served as First Editor of British Journal of Nutrition. He is currently co-Editor in Chief of Nutrition, Associate Editor of Clinical Nutrition, Associate Editor of Journal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle. Dr Laviano's studies have been funded by private and public institutions, including the Italian Ministry of Scientific Research. Dr Laviano has a total of more than 160 publications in international peer reviewed journals

Rajavel Elango

Dr Rajavel Elango is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, and School of Population and Public Health, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. He is also an Investigator at the Research Institute, BC Children's Hospital, and an associate member in the Human Nutrition Program at the Faculty of Land and Food Systems, University of British Columbia. Dr Elango obtained his PhD in Nutrition and Metabolism from the University of Alberta, and did his Post Doctoral Fellowship at the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Canada.

Dr Rajavel Elango's research program focuses on the identification of the dietary requirements for protein and amino acids and protein quality of foods during key stages of growth and development, such as pregnancy and in childhood malnutrition using state-of-the-art stable isotope techniques. His research also focuses on inborn errors of metabolism, and how non-invasive stable isotope based techniques can be used as diagnostic tools to measure effectiveness of new treatment and management modalities. Dr Elango's international nutrition research is accomplished by collaborations with research institutes located in India.

Dr Elango serves on the Editorial Board of the British Journal of Nutrition, and is a member of the American Society for Nutrition and Canadian Nutrition Society.

Dr Elango was the recipient of the 2013 Vernon R. Young International Award for Amino Acid research from the American Society for Nutrition. Dr Elango was part of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) 2014 Expert Working Group on methods to assess protein quality of foods, and the FAO 2017 Expert Working Group on “Protein Quality Assessment in Follow-up Formula for Young Children and Ready to use Therapeutic Foods.
