Current Opinion in Clinical Nutrition and Metabolic Care was launched in 1998. It is one of a successful series of review journals whose unique format is designed to provide a systematic and critical assessment of the literature as presented in the many primary journals. The fields of clinical nutrition and metabolic care are divided into 15 sections that are reviewed once a year. Each section is assigned a Section Editor, a leading authority in the area, who identifies the most important topics at that time. Here we are pleased to introduce the Section Editors for this issue.
Professor Annemie Schols is Professor of Nutrition and Metabolism in Chronic Diseases, and Scientific Director of NUTRIM graduate school for Nutrition, Toxicology and Metabolism at the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences of Maastricht University Medical Centre (MUMC), the Netherlands. Professor Schols is also Leading MUMC-MOVE, one of the 4 Dutch centres for sports, physical activity and health in the Netherlands, supported by the Netherlands Research Council. The focus of Maastricht in this national initiative is in development and implementation of innovative biomedical technologies and behavioural strategies to adopt a healthy lifestyle in patients and in populations with an increased risk profile (i.e. obese children, frail elderly).
Her translational research focuses on metabolic aberrations and molecular mechanisms of cachexia and skeletal muscle weakness in chronic diseases using COPD and lung cancer as clinical models. Furthermore she conducts physiological (nutrition, exercise) and pharmacological clinical trials in this field. She has published more than 250 international scientific publications and has a Hirsch citation factor of 42.
Professor Schols serves in several scientific editorial boards and is a member of the Health Council of the Netherlands.
Professor Labros Sidossis received his doctorate from the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, USA. He has served as an Associate Professor and Director of the Obesity Research Program at the Department of Surgery, University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, and a Research Associate Professor at the Department of Internal Medicine, Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.
He is currently Professor and Director of the Laboratory of Nutrition and Clinical Dietetics of the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at Harokopio University in Athens, Greece. Dr Sidossis' research interests include the use of tracer techniques in the study of human metabolism, the biochemical mechanisms regulating lipid metabolism in humans, epidemiology of obesity in children and adolescents, behavioral therapy of obesity, nutritional management of morbid obesity and sports nutrition. He has received grant support from the National Institute of Health, USA, Novartis, Friesland, the Hellenic Swimming Federation and the European Union. Dr Sidossis has published over 90 articles in peer-reviewed journals and numerous abstracts in scientific congresses and meetings. He has been an invited speaker and has assumed committee responsibilities, in many congresses and conferences. He is also a member of the editorial board and a journal referee in several scientific journals.
Gil Hardy PhD has joint appointments as Professor of Clinical Nutrition in the Institute of Food, Nutrition and Human Health, Massey University and Professor of Pharmaceutical Nutrition at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, where he is involved with collaborative formulation, metabolic and clinical research into micronutrients, lipid emulsions and other nutraceuticals with colleagues in Australasia, the UK and Latin America. Gil trained as a biochemist, with degrees from Bristol and Cambridge Universities. He subsequently worked in Belgium and Germany before beginning post-doctoral research in the Metabolic Research Laboratory of Nobel Prize Winner, the late Professor Sir Hans Krebs in Oxford.
Professor Hardy is Vice President of the Australasian Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (AuSPEN). He has served on the Research Committee of the American Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN), the Council of the UK Nutrition Society and was a founder member of its Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism Group. He is past Chairman of the British Pharmaceutical Nutrition Group, who in 2002 established the annual ‘Allwood-Hardy’ lecture jointly in his honour. An active member of ASPEN, AuSPEN, ESPEN and FELANPE he has lectured on nutraceuticals and pharmaceutical issues of nutrition therapy at many of their annual Congresses.
Gil Hardy is Editor of Complete Nutrition Australasia, is a Section Editor for Current Opinion in Clinical Nutrition and Metabolic Care, Associate Editor of Current Research in Nutraceuticals and co-edits the ‘Nutraceuticals’ column for the international journal Nutrition. In all Professor Hardy has presented approximately 200 papers, posters and educational lectures in the fields of Pharmaceutical and Clinical Nutrition. He is recognised as a world authority on the pharmaceutical and metabolic properties of Glutamine and is the founder and organiser of the internationally acclaimed Oxford Glutamine Workshops. Together with other PN enthusiasts he represents IPANEMA (International Parenteral Nutrition Education and Methodology Advancement) a charitable trust, which sponsors satellite symposia at major scientific meetings around the world.
Henry C. Lukaski
Dr Lukaski is an adjunct professor in the Department of Physical Education and Exercise Science and Clinical Professor in Internal Medicine at the University of North Dakota, and a consultant to the biomedical industry in the United States and Europe. He retired as the Assistant Center Director and Supervisory Research Physiologist at the United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, Human Nutrition Research Center in Grand Forks, North Dakota.
He studies the interaction of physical activity and mineral intakes in humans, emphasizing iron, zinc, copper, magnesium, and chromium, to promote health and optimal physiological function/performance throughout life. His work also includes development and validation of non-invasive methods to assess human body composition. He has published numerous technical publications in high quality, peer-reviewed scientific journals, book chapters, one book, invited editorials, professional policy statements for the American College of Sports Medicine, and presented invited lectures at universities, research institutes, and scientific and professional societies world-wide.
Dr Lukaski is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine, the Human Biology Council and the Nutrition Society of Central America. He is a member of the American Physiological Society, American Society of Nutrition, Endocrine Society, New York Academy of Sciences, Sigma Xi, and Phi Kappa Phi, and a Charter Member of the American Heart Association Council on Nutrition, Metabolism and Physical Activity. Dr Lukaski has received numerous awards and recognition for the United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, Sigma Xi and other professional groups for his contributions to the fields of nutrition and physiology, and development of young scientists.
Dr Lukaski serves as a member of the Editorial Boards of Current Nutrition Reviews, British Journal of Nutrition, International Journal of Applied Sports Science, Nutrition, and CRC Series on Nutrition in Exercise and Sport, and an editorial consultant for a variety of peer-reviewed journals in physiology, nutrition, medicine and sport sciences. He is a past Associate Editor of Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, and a member of the Editorial Boards of the International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Journal of Nutrition. Dr Lukaski has served and continues to provide service and contributes as an advisor and consultant to many national and international health agencies and research organizations, including the National Academy of Sciences, National Institutes of Health, Food and Drug Administration, Department of Defense, National Aeronautic and Space Administration, Pan American Health Organization, the World Health Organization, and the International and US Olympic Committees.
As an NIH pre-doctoral trainee, Dr Lukaski received his Master of Science and doctoral degrees in physiology and nutrition from the Pennsylvania State University, served as a post-doctoral research associate with the United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, and was a Visiting Scientist at the Brookhaven National Laboratory.
Nathalie M. Delzenne
Nathalie Delzenne is Professor at the Université catholique de Louvain. She is a lecturer in Nutrition and Biochemistry and is the leader of the research group in Experimental Nutrition at the Louvain Drug Research Institute. She is a Member of several international scientific committees (Member of the Council of the Nutrition Society as European representative, Member of the Scientific Board of the European Academy of Nutritional Science, Member of different working groups at the International Life Science Institute- Europe, Member of the International Scientific Association for the study of Prebiotics and Probiotics, and Member of the Scientific Council for several international food industries).
After a PhD in Pharmaceutical sciences obtained in 1991, she performed a post-doctoral research (Inserm, Paris and Pasteur Institute, Lille, France) devoted to analyse the effect of nutrients on gene expression in the field of obesity. Back at the Université catholique de Louvain, she started an academic carrier and her team is developing projects in order to assess the fundamental mechanisms underlying the functional effects of prebiotic-type nutrients. The current hypothesis is the involvement of intestinal peptides and inflammatory tone in the modulation of food intake and glucose metabolism upon obesity and cancer by nutrients targeting gut microflora.
She has been involved in several International European Project devoted to functional food (AIRII-CT94-1095; FAIR CT 97 3001; BIO4-CT97- 2145; GLK-2000-0086; grant from international Life Sciences Institute in 1998).
Professor Peter Stehle received his PhD degree in nutritional science from the University of Hohenheim, Stuttgart, Germany with a focus on peptide synthesis and analytics. He started his career as Post Doc at the Department of Biochemistry and Nutrition Science, University Hohenheim. Under the guidance of Professor Peter Fürst, PhD, MD, his working group was engaged in basic and clinical studies to introduce glutamine containing short chain peptides as amino acid sources in clinical nutrition. After his “Habilitation” he has served as Assistant Professor at the same department. In 1994 he became the chair in nutrition physiology in the Department of Nutrition and Food Sciences at the University of Bonn. Since 2006 he has been vice-Dean for study affairs with the Faculty of Agriculture.
He is currently serving as President of the German Nutrition Society (DGE) and is a Member of several scientific boards. His broad scientific focus includes continuous research in amino acid/peptide metabolism in diseased states, development of in vitro assays to study substrate utilization, experimental and clinical studies to investigate bioavailability of minor components in food, nutrition and ageing, calcium, vitamin D and bone metabolism, and nutrition in adolescence. Ongoing studies are supported within the EU framework programs, by various national institutions and by industry grants. Professor Stehle received various scholarships and honors including the Konrad-Lang-Preis (German Society of Nutritional Medicine). He has published more than 150 papers in a range of peer-reviewed journals.
