Papers Presented at the 2006 Meeting of the Knee Society: Comment on the Classics
Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research hopes to make all of the previously published Classic Articles available online and, to that end, we republished in this issue one paper which relates to the new Classic Article of Dr. Emil Hauser. Hauser's transfer of the tibial tubercle medially, distally, and posteriorly for recurrent patellar dislocations was an important evolutionary step in the development of surgical techniques for a specific knee disorder, but it was subsequently supplanted by operations whose originators had a better understanding of joint reaction forces in the knee. Dr. Roux's paper on patellar dislocations describes a lateral release and medial transfer of the infrapatellar tendon. These Classic Articles by Hauser and Roux reveal the incremental nature of progress in medicine and surgery.
Each of the Classic Articles also describes procedures which were adapted by many orthopaedic surgeons but later abandoned. Nevertheless, they are both part of the history of orthopaedics and the evolution of the specialty.
