Thirty-one contact lenses, both myopic and high plus correction, of varying polymeric compositions and with water contents ranging from 38.5% to 79%, were studied to determine the amount of deposit that would accumulate on the lens surface in an 8-hour wearing period. Volunteers who did not normally wear contact lenses were used. Examination of the lenses by scanning electron microscopy showed that the higher water content lenses had more deposits on the surface than did the lower water content lenses. Deposits on the high water content lenses were multi-layered, covered the entire surface, and had a convoluted, complex morphology reminiscent of the deposits seen on extended-wear lenses in place for more than 2 months. All lenses studied had surface deposits, and the deposit type was similar in all lenses.
