COURSE ABSTRACTS: PDF OnlyKamiya Chiaki MDCLAO journal: January 1984 - p 96-99 Buy Abstract It is vitally important that metabolic changes in the aqueous humor under the extended wear of contact lenses be evaluated as well as corneal changes. In this study the amounts of lactic acid and glucose in rabbit aqueous humor were determined after the extended wear of three kinds of gas-permeable hard contact lenses of similar materials but of different oxygen permeabilities. An increase in the amount of lactic acid and a decrease in the amount of glucose were observed in the beginning, but these changes diminished after 14 days with the relatively low-Dk lenses. In contrast, there was a tendency for lactic acid levels to decrease and for glucose levels to return to near-normal in eyes wearing the high-Dk lenses. © 1984 The Contact Lens Association of Ophthalmologists, Inc.
