In the Nordic countries of Europe—Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden—the percentage of aphakics wearing contact lenses is very low (in Sweden it is estimated to be less than 1 per cent). This is astonishing as the income per capita is among the highest in the world and hospital care is uniformly of very high quality. Conservative opinions among the ophthalmologists must have been a determining factor.
