The International Society of Nurses in Cancer Care (ISNCC) and its partners, Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), were pleased to host two exciting UICC and ISNCC Collaborative on Cervical Cancer Screening Program Workshops in Lima, Peru and San Salvador, El Salvador in September 2015.
The goal of these ‘train the trainer’ workshops was to build capacity in cervical cancer screening amongst nurses from various countries in Latin and South America – including Argentina, Belize, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, and Peru. The workshop topics included Introduction, Prevention and Control Programs, Community Mobilization, Education and Counselling, HPV Vaccination, Screening and Treatment of Cervical Pre-cancer, Diagnosis and Treatment of Invasive Cervical Cancer, and Palliative Care. The Lima, Peru workshop was led by Victoria Brunelli from Buenos Aires, Argentina and Marise Dutra Souto from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The San Salvador, El Salvador workshop was led by Myrna McLaughlin de Anderson from Panama City, Panama and Luz Esperanza Ayala de Calvo from Bogota, Colombia.
The cervical cancer screening workshops were truly a success – with almost 50 attendees at the San Salvador, El Salvador workshop and almost 30 attendees at the Lima, Peru workshop. ISNCC, UICC and CDC are looking forward hosting another workshop in a new location in Latin America in 2016.
