In 1978, she received the Oncology Nursing Certificate from the Royal Marsden Hospital. In 1979, she established the first Nursing Research Unit in a specialist cancer hospital in the the United Kingdom and created a research-friendly culture as she encouraged nurses to become involved in research. It was at the Marsden that she initiated and brought to fruition the Royal Marsden Hospital Nursing Policy and Procedures Manual which is still widely used and adapted in many parts of the world. In 1981, Professor Hunt was honored with fellowship in the Royal College of Nursing of the United Kingdom. She was a Commonwealth Fellow in Canada, the recipient of the Smith and Nephew Research Scholarship, and held two visiting professorships.
