From December 5th to December 8th 2007, “Thorax 2007” was held in the city of Montevideo, Uruguay. This event was on the occasion of the “VII South American Congress of Bronchology,” the “XV South American Congress of Thoracic Surgery,” and the “XVIII Uruguayan Congress of Pulmonology and Thoracic Surgery.”
Four days of intense activity included precongress courses and workshops, conferences, symposia, and multidisciplinary discussions of clinical cases and research poster sessions. Topics pertained to pediatric and adult bronchoscopy, lung cancer, thoracic infections, sleep disorders, interventional bronchoscopy, and new techniques for diagnosis and treatment, such as electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopy, valve treatment for emphysema, and novel approaches to caring for patients with bronchopleural fistulas. Additional attentions were turned to the need for disseminating harmonized, structured curricula that may be used for bronchoscopy education.
The meeting was highly successful, showing once more the high scientific level of the almost 500 South American chest physicians, surgeons, and otolaryngologists participating from each and every country of South America. In addition, several foreign speakers from Europe and the United States contributed to the success of this meeting. The next meeting of the South American Association for Bronchology will be held in Argentina in the year 2009.
