Bacterial burden and biofilm are key factors contributing to persistent inflammation, tissue destruction, delayed wound healing, and other serious complications. Initial evaluation of wound infection begins with a clinical assessment of signs and symptoms to avoid indiscriminate wound cultures and inappropriate use of antibiotics. There is little consensus about criteria required to differentiate superficial/local infection from deep infection. Based on review of the literature, this video explains the use of a proposed wound infection checklist. The checklist incorporated two clusters of signs and symptoms associated with superficial/local infection versus deep infection.
