Surgery and Jazz: The Art of Improvisation in the Evidence-based Medicine Era

Technical skills seem to be necessary but not sufficient to ensure patient safety. Paying attention to nontechnical skills will increase the likelihood of maintaining high levels of error-free performance. As in jazz music, improvisation is essential for correct management of the surgical performance and any possible error.
