The content of “The Human Experience” in Anesthesia & Analgesia is focused on the medical humanities. This content encompasses literature, art, music, creative writing, philosophy, ethics, anthropology, ethnography, and history. “The Human Experience” is comprised of vignettes. Specifically, either a short piece of original creative work (e.g., fiction or non-fiction prose, poetry, or annotated photography, digital image, music) or a very brief commentary on an existing work of art (e.g., painting, sculpture, folk/ethnic art, photograph, digital image, music).

As part of our recognition of the 100th anniversary of Anesthesia & Analgesia we assembled a Centennial Committee that collectively identified topics that they consider most relevant to the future trajectory of anesthesiology, perioperative medicine, critical care, and pain medicine. We commissioned a series of prospective, futuristic-oriented papers focused on a subset of these identified opportunities for continued innovations and contributions in the quad-partite missions of clinical care, research, education, and service. As these papers and their accompanying editorials publish in Anesthesia & Analgesia throughout 2022 each will be added to this collection for easy accessibility.

Patient Blood Management

The focus of this special-themed issue of Anesthesia & Analgesia is Patient Blood Management (PBM). PBM is a patient-centered, systematic, evidence-based approach to improve patient outcomes by managing and preserving a patient’s own blood, while promoting patient safety and empowerment. PBM is the new standard of care for optimizing a patient’s blood health. Herein, these manuscripts are authored by international experts who present current aspects of PBM critical thinking, physician-patient shared decision making and patient-centered outcomes, economics and clinical research. Consistent quantitative rigor is a challenge for all medical journals. The Editors of Anesthesia & Analgesia believe that educating our entire stakeholder audience about basic study design, statistical analysis, and data reporting is a major responsibility. This collection comprises a series of 20 short tutorials which collectively cover these fundamental concepts in a practical way that individuals not formally trained in statistics or epidemiology can comprehend. These tutorials parallel the content recommendations of the 2014 Statistical Analyses and Methods in the Published Literature (SAMPL) Guidelines. Each tutorial cites specific published papers that represent prototypical examples of study design, statistical analysis, and/or data reporting.

Since 2011, Anesthesia & Analgesia has published a series of peer-reviewed Statistical Grand Rounds, comprising in-depth, advanced expositions on appropriate design and statistical methodology for topics of major and practical importance for anesthesia, critical care, perioperative medicine, and pain medicine research and literature. Statistical Grand Rounds articles are meant to advocate for, enable, and guide best statistical practice for researchers and data analysts. These articles address a relevant design or analysis issue either by introducing new statistical methods or by giving detailed descriptions of existing methods that are needed in the above literature. Applications to actual study data are often included, along with programming code to facilitate implementation.
