A special article in this issue of Anesthesia & Analgesia gives readers insight into the advance of precision medicine. The authors describe how health care is at a turning point in the fundamental way we approach treating patients. Although we can successfully manage medical and surgical conditions broadly and in generic ways based on population data, the future of health care will witness tailoring our knowledge and care to individual patients and their unique biology. This infographic summarizes the critical factors that will convene to advance the progress of precision medicine. These include phenome based genomic studies, advances in biosensor technology and data sharing, n-of-1 trials, and the social acceptance of implementing new scientific discoveries. In the perioperative setting, clinicians should be prepared to see the evolution of precision medicine as it pertains to predictive analytics and risk reduction. The reader is encouraged to review the cited article for a full scope of understanding of these concepts.
