The treatment of cancer pain has become an increasingly significant medical management issue, as advances in surgical and chemotherapy treatments have continued to extend the lives of patients who have been diagnosed with cancer. While systemic opioids offer 1 potential treatment modality, intrathecal drug delivery systems offer the promise of effective pain control while reducing systemic side effects and providing the patient with both continuous medication and the ability to dose medication on an as-needed basis. In this infographic, we review the subset of cancer patients within the largest registry of intrathecal drug delivery systems published to date and describe how these devices work, their efficacy in treating pain, as well as the outcomes associated with these devices.
