Recently, investigators and readers of the AJPM&R raised concerns regarding the article published by Metoki et al., (2003;82:862–865) on the topic of muscle atrophy in hemiplegia. After an investigation including the review of the original raw data, the authors agree to the publication of this erratum.

In this letter, we report the results of re-analysis on our article (1), which was performed because of concerns raised by an independent investigator elsewhere.

Mistaken results on the ratios of muscle volume in the hemiplegic to non-hemiplegic sides were described in the Table 1. Re-analyzed results using the raw data are shown in the newly calculated and corrected Table 1.

According to the corrected results, the sentence in the original manuscript that “the ratio of muscle volume in the hemiplegic limb to the non-hemiplegic limb was lower in the older age group” was wrong. Correctly, the ratio of muscle volume in the hemiplegic limb to the non-hemiplegic limb was lower in the younger age group, with close to significance (P = 0.07).

Therefore, the sentence in the results of the original manuscript “Also, the ratio of the muscle volume in the hemiplegic limb to that of non-hemiplegic limb was significantly lower in the older age group (≥65 years old) than the younger group.” should be corrected to “Also, the ratio of the muscle volume in the hemiplegic limb to that of non-hemiplegic limb was lower in the younger age group (<65 years old) than the older group, with close to significance (P = 0.07).”

Similarly, the sentence in the abstract of the original manuscript “In addition, the ratio of the muscle volume in hemiplegic side to that in non-hemiplegic side was significantly lower in the older group than in the younger group.” should be corrected to “In addition, the ratio of the muscle volume in hemiplegic side to that in non-hemiplegic side was lower in the younger group than in the older group, with close to significance (P = 0.07).”

In association with the results of the re-analysis, one sentence in the discussion section of the original manuscript “Indeed, the muscle volume decreased with age, and the magnitude of atrophy was more pronounced in the older group because the ratio of the muscle volume in the hemiplegic side to that in the non-hemiplegic side was lower in the group aged ≥65 years old as compared with those <65 years old.” should be corrected in order to avoid misunderstanding. Corrected sentence is that “Indeed, the muscle volume decreased with age, and the magnitude of atrophy was more pronounced in the older group because the muscle volume in the non-hemiplegic side was lower in the group aged ≥65 years old as compared with that <65 years old.”

Furthermore, muscular volume of the thigh in the results section was also re-analyzed using the raw data. The average values of muscle volume of the thigh were slightly changed from 155.6 ± 56.6 to 153.5 ± 57.7 cm3 in hemiplegic side and from 198.0 ± 67.2 to 195.7 ± 68.9 cm3 in non-hemiplegic side, respectively (P < 0.0001 between hemiplegic and non-hemiplegic sides in the corrected data).
