“Patient safety” encompasses a wide variety of specific issues as well as overall approaches and considerations. This collection illustrates some of the many facets of the topic, with articles ranging from common safety issues (falls, opioids, driving safely as we age) to broader perspectives on safety such as a historical overview of nurses’ evolving role in patient safety, and a comparison of nurse perceptions of a patient’s level of risk vs. risks as determined via electronic algorithm. This collection also includes articles from Pennsylvania’s Patient Safety Authority (, which collects and analyzes data on serious events occurring in hospitals, ambulatory surgery facilities, birthing centers, and abortion facilities and provides recommendations for changes in practice.
